Val Gallagher plays Deloris Van Cartier, a down on her luck night-club singer trying to make it big in Philadelphia circa 1978. After witnessing a murder Deloris is put in protective custody and hidden in a convent until the trial. Her experience there is life-transforming both for herself and the nuns. This transformation is what Val Gallagher finds most appealing about the Sister Act story. In fact, her favourite song is her solo ‘Sister Act’ towards the end of the show where Deloris sings “I’ve got all I need to feel like I’m a star…I’ve got my sisters by my side …I’ve got my sisters’ love and pride”. The message for Val is that “people can change their lives” and “all we really need is the love and support of others”.
Sister Act is Val’s first musical and her first time performing with Northumberland Players. She loves playing the sassy Deloris and enjoys the camaraderie of the theatre where she has “met a whole new family”.
Deloris is accompanied by a superb cast, toe-tapping music that will shake your very soul and a band to beat all bands. It doesn’t get better than that!
