NP Youth Theatre Summer Camps

Theatre camp keeps the brain active, develops thinking skills, and maintains reading levels over the summer.  At Theatre Summer Camp, children aged 4 through 16 explore their interests or extend their love of theatre and drama. From acting to lighting, improv to costumes, singing to stage management, qualified instructors guide young people through the entire process of mounting a production beginning with the audition through to the final bows. Days are packed with fun, games and activities chosen to focus and teach skills required for stage performance as well as everyday life.

Our dynamic staff have specialized training in several different aspects of the performing arts, on stage as well as backstage. Guests artists and technicians are brought in to expand the program.

A Theatre Intensive week has been added for children with stage experience.  This session has extra highly-qualified guest instructors in three disciplines: music, acting, and movement. The class is limited to 12 students with an audition and resume required.

 General Details

Camp sessions will begin on Monday, July 9, 2018, and continue through to Friday, August 24, 2018.

Camp sessions run 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. Arrangements may be made for early drop off and late pick up at an added cost.

Children may be enrolled for multiple sessions as each session is unique in major components.

NOTE: This year there is an overlap in ages in some groups. This is to accommodate kids who are perhaps more or less outgoing for their age or who may have the experience to be able to handle working with older students. Also, if they attend a camp where they are the older student they may want to come back and do a camp where they are the youngest. Email us if you need some guidance for camp session selections.

Camp sessions are held in the Firehall Theatre, located directly behind Victoria Hall at 213 Second Street, Cobourg.

We offer a 10% discount for families paying full fees for camps before June 1, 2018. (Note: this discount is automatic if you use PayPal.)  However, there are no discounts on the Theatre Intensive or LIT programs.

Camp Sessions for 2018

Budding Actors – Ages  4-6*

One-week session. Fee $200 per week   BA1 – July 16-20  BA2 August 6-10, 2018.

This session is devised to build self esteem and develop team work and cooperative learning skills through theatre games and activities. The program will incorporate art activities, play, movement and the basic skills of acting instruction on the stage. Family and friends will be invited to a performance on the Friday at the end of the last session.

Centre Stage – Ages 6* – 9

One week session. Fee: $200 per week.  CS1 – July 9-13, 2018,  CS2, July 23-27 2018,  CS3 – August 13-17, 2018.

The campers in the Centre Stage program will experience the different aspects of theatre including acting, singing, improvisation, movement and costume through various activities games and workshops! There will be a production for family and friends at the end of each week. *Consider the confidence level and experience of your 6 year old.

Future Stars – Ages 9* – 12

Two week sessions. Fee: $350.00 per session.  FS1 – July 16-27, 2018.  FS2 – July 30-August 10, 2018,   FS3 – August 13-24, 2018 (note that this session begins on the Civic Holiday)

The focus in future stars is to build the confidence to speak in front of an audience and to “stay in the moment” on stage. Campers will work in groups and also develop audition techniques, and character development through acting technique and the basics of scene study.  Campers will learn the basics of stage management, sound and lighting.  Family and friends will experience the progress of the students in a performance at the end of the two week session. *Consider the confidence level and experience of your 9 year old.

Name in Lights – Ages 13 – 15

Two week sessions. Fee: $350 per session.  NL1 – July 9-20 2018,  NL2 – July 23-August 3, 2018,  NL3 August13-24.

The oldest campers will be led to explore and expand their creative sides through monologue and script writing by our imaginative and well-trained instructors. Campers will be challenged to open up as actors and as young adults bringing together all of their knowledge of live theatre. Several guest instructors will compliment the instruction. Each two-week session stands alone culminating in a performance.

 New! Theatre Intensive – Ages 10-15

One week session. Fee: $350.00  TI1 – July 30-August 3, 2018.

The Theatre Intensive is for students who have had experience on stage in theatre, who are taking classes in music or dance or acting, or performing on stage in several productions and who want to raise their skill level. Instruction will be individualized but assumes some advanced skills. Extra guest instructors will be hired for the triple-threat disciplines of acting, singing and movement. Small group vocal sessions will focus on specific skills to improve singing, articulation and breathing; acting sessions are designed to teach specific stage techniques; and movement classes will be used to integrate the body with acting and singing. The program will be individualized so students may focus on musical theatre or develop one area of the disciplines with highly qualified guest instructors. The week will culminate in a showcase presentation. Not all students need to be interested in “triple threat”.

Note: This program requires a resume and audition. The audition and/or interview will be early June. Due to the high cost of this program discounts do not apply for this specific session. Applications for this program must be made before June 1 for auditions to be scheduled. Send resume to

Leaders in Training – Ages 15 and 16

Orientation/Training plus 1 camp session to be assigned. Fee: $100.00. LT1 .

Note the extended time commitment from 8:45 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.  

Candidates for this program will apply and be asked to come for an interview with the Camp director. This leadership program has been developed to give youth aged 15 and 16  the opportunity to build skills needed when looking for their first job. Participants will be part of a 3 day pre-camp training session and then will be assigned to assist with 1 camp session between July 9 and August 17 to work alongside camp staff performing various activities. Leaders in Training will be encouraged to develop the skills and attitudes which employers are seeking for in future employees. Leaders in Training will be assessed and encouraged throughout the session as they build their self confidence, assist with theatre games and rehearsals. They are expected to interact with campers and act as positive role models. This is excellent training for future teachers, child care workers and other positions related to working with children.

How to Register Your Child for Camp

  • Complete the registration form, one per child and camp session. Download Summer Camp Registration (Word) or Theatre Summer Camp Registration
  • Note that your child will be registered for camp when the deposit or fee is paid, but the registration form must be submitted before your child can start camp.
  • Pay the camp fees:
    • A non-refundable registration fee deposit is required. If a deposit is not received at registration, the camper is not guaranteed a spot.
    • The following deposits (deemed an administrative fee) are required:
      • Budding Actors: $25
      • All other Camp Sessions: $75
    • Full camp fees must be paid at least two (2) weeks prior to the start of the camp session for which the child is registered for final registration. A camper from the waiting list may replace your child beyond the above due date. The administrative fee will not be refunded.
  • Submit the registration form and the camp fees. You can do this in many ways:
    • mail the form and a cheque for the fees to the Firehall, 213 Second St., Cobourg, K9A 3N7
    • mail the form to the Firehall and pay by credit card by telephoning the office at 905-372-0577
    • bring the form to the Firehall, 213 Second St., Cobourg, behind Victoria Hall, on Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., and pay by cash, cheque, credit card, or debit card
    • mail or bring the form to the Firehall and pay by PayPal using the form below. Please call 905-372-0577 or email to inform us that a PayPal registration in your child’s name is coming.

No refund or credit will be given for cancellation or withdrawals less than two(2) weeks prior to the start of the camp session for which the child is registered. Prior to that date, a written request for cancellation must be submitted to the Northumberland Players. Any refund, less the administrative fee, will be processed at the end of August.
