Northumberland Players provides opportunities to engage in all aspects of quality theatre – it is our mission. Northumberland Players was formed by actors and backstage people who had a passion for live theatre and continues to be a progressive and engaging community theatre. It is a company that is run by its membership for the purpose of presenting seasons that provide diverse artistic challenges for our members and volunteers to develop their interests, talents and skills in front of an audience. Membership gives you a voice in how the company is run. Members participate in the operation of Northumberland Players, they vote at the Annual General Meeting in November, and are eligible to serve on the Board of Directors to make the big decisions about the next season. Members are invited to members-only events. They also receive monthly e-Blasts keeping them informed of events at Northumberland Players. Membership fees provide important on-going support for the day-to-day administration of the Players such as insurance for volunteers, communication costs, and general operating expenses. Most importnatly, our membership numbers are proof that Northumberland Players is a dramatic for in this county. The fees have ot increased in 40 years. In fact we introduced a family discount a few years ago. Choose an Individual Membership for only $25, or a Family Membership, welcoming spouses and partners, and children and youth as non-voting members, for only $40. Complete an application form if you are a new member or if your details have changed. New members must be approved at the November 26, 2017, meeting to be eligible to vote at the AGM. Go to Membership to sign up and pay up now and to get details on payment options.
Nominate Someone as a Member of the Board of Directors
You may have heard grumbling. It is obvious that some members of the Board have served several terms, usually after saying, “This is the last time.” However, when there are not enough nominations, someone who is familiar with the positions often steps up again. To be honest, they probably love what they are doing, but it is time for more people to get involved in the management of the company.
You can read about the various responsibilities at Board of Directors. The introduction of staggered two-year terms is supposed to provide support for new Board members. Because of the timing of the elections, the Board’s first major responsibility is to plan the next season, so a full Board is needed to be prepared to make the right decisions. This is a working Board and everyone takes on responsibilty for getting things done. It is work and it takes time, but the rewards of working with other passionate peole for the success of the Northumberland Players is worth it.
Why not nominate someone who you think would make a fine Member of the Board of Directors? Or consider asking someone to nominate you. Both nominee and nominators must be members in good standing when they sign the NP Board Nomination Form.
If someone from the Nominations Committee taps you on the shoulder to ask if you would serve on the Board, why not say, “Yes, I will” this year.
The Nomination Process
Pursuant to the current by-laws the eleven directors of the board shall be elected individually to their respective positions for a two year term. Therefore 6 positions are open, and five directors stay on for a second year. You must be a paid up member and over the age of 18 to serve on the Board of Directors.
For more information see Board of Directors
A nominating committee, led by the current Vice President (Matt Kowalyk), is seeking individuals interested in serving on the Board. Should you wish to nominate an individual, you must have their consent and both you and the person you are nominating must be paid-up members. Members may also nominate themselves. All nominations must have a seconder who is also a member. Download the NP Board Nomination Form.
If you are not currently a member and want to participate in the nominations process, complete an application for membership online at Membership and submit with the fees before October 20 so that it can be approved at the October 23 meeting.
Mail or hand deliver the sealed nomination to Matt Kowalyk, The Firehall Theatre, 213 Second Street, Cobourg K9A 3N7.
Or you can scan the signed form and email it to Matt Kowalyk.
